It has been brought to the Association's attention that there will be a change to the gas code this summer that will require a minimum of an 8 feet clearance to the side yard property line for venting of applicances.
SMCAA agrees that the ramifications of this change will be a detriment to our industry and to the home construction industry as a whole.
Our new Licencing and Permitting committees for both Calgary and Edmonton have called an emergency meeting on March 10, 2010 with the Safety Codes Council, Chief Gas and HVAC Inspectors, New Home Warranty, Mechanical Contractors Association, Calgary Home Builders and the Edmonton Home Builders Associations.
SMCAA is asking that you as a member of this association provide any comments and concerns with respect to this issue, so that they can be brought foward at this meeting.
We will be calling a general membership meeting to discuss the outcome of this meeting in the near future.

The Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Alberta ("SMCAA") is a chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association ("SMACNA").
SMCAA is a provincial association with membership in Calgary, Edmonton, Camrose, Nisku, Sherwood Park, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Airdrie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Redcliff.
SMCAA is an Association of fellow contractors, suppliers and manufacturers that lobbies for changes and issues that affect it's members and the HVAC industry.
SMCAA gets involved with local and provincial government with regards to code changes, permits, standards of practice, legal issues. etc. Without SMCAA these issues would be forced on industry without any consultation and with little recourse to change them.
